My Night Shift Begins When Your Sleep Does

Why Cats Become Olympic Athletes After Midnight

By Gryzka, Midnight Athlete, Professional Zoomie Champion, and Director of Household Night Operations

 Dear humans,

I have noticed something very strange about you.

Every evening, around 10 p.m., you start saying things like:

"I'm so tired."

"I can't keep my eyes open."

"I'm going to bed early tonight."

And then you do something completely ridiculous.

You turn off the lights.

You get comfortable.

You close your eyes.

You fall asleep.

Excellent.

Because that means...

My shift begins. 😼

11:47 p.m. — The Warm-Up Phase 🐾

A true athlete never starts without preparation.

First, I stretch.

Front paws forward.

Back legs extended.

Tail positioned for maximum balance.

A little dramatic yawn.

A little suspicious stare into the darkness.

My human thinks I'm relaxing.

Incorrect.

I am preparing for competition.

12:03 a.m. — The First Sprint πŸƒ‍♀️

The hallway.

My track.

The sofa.

My obstacle.

The mysterious shadow.

My opponent.

Suddenly...

ZOOM.

I run.

Not because something is chasing me.

Not because I need to go somewhere.

But because my legs have officially informed me:

"Gryzka, we haven't run at full speed today. This is unacceptable."

My body understands athletic excellence.

12:26 a.m. — The Great Invisible Enemy πŸ‘»

Humans often ask:

"What are you chasing?"

The answer is simple.

Something you cannot see.

Something only cats can detect.

Something extremely important.

Perhaps:

  • A tiny ghost.
  • A suspicious piece of dust.
  • A memory from three years ago.
  • A noise that happened once in 2019.

A professional never reveals all training secrets.

1:15 a.m. — The Furniture Olympics πŸ†

Welcome to the main event.

The Sofa Jump.

The Chair Sprint.

The Bedside Table Balance Challenge.

The Curtain Inspection.

The Cardboard Box Wrestling Championship.

Commentators describe my performance as:

"Unnecessary."

"Extremely loud."

"Why is she doing this now?"

Jealousy is common among non-athletes.

2:00 a.m. — The Human Observation Test πŸ‘€

Now comes my favorite activity.

Watching humans sleep.

Fascinating creatures.

They make strange noises.

They move randomly.

They occasionally say things while unconscious.

I carefully monitor the situation.

Someone has to protect the household.

You’re welcome.

2:37 a.m. — The Face Inspection 😼

A very important security check.

I gently approach my human.

I sniff.

I stare.

I decide:

Alive? ✅

Breathing? ✅

Still capable of opening food containers tomorrow? ✅

Excellent.

Inspection complete.

3:14 a.m. — The Mysterious Object Attack 🧦

Every night, there is a moment when I discover something suspicious.

A sock.

A paper bag.

A bottle cap.

A tiny piece of something that humans ignored.

Humans call it "trash."

I call it:

An unexplored adventure opportunity.

4:02 a.m. — The Final Championship Round πŸ₯‡

The grand finale.

The legendary:

Race Across The Apartment At Maximum Speed For Absolutely No Reason.

Rules:

  1. Start suddenly.
  2. Make humans question reality.
  3. Slide slightly on the floor.
  4. Pretend everything was intentional.
  5. Sit down and groom yourself like a professional.

Perfect execution.

Why We Do It 🐱

Humans think cats sleep all day.

Technically...

Correct.

But they forget something important.

Resting is part of training.

A tiger doesn't run all day.

A lion doesn't chase everything it sees.

And a small striped household athlete must conserve energy for the important moments.

Like:

3 a.m.

When everyone else is unprepared.

The Human Complaint Department πŸ™„

"Gryzka, why are you running?"

Because I can.

"Gryzka, why now?"

Because now is the correct time.

"Gryzka, can you please sleep?"

Can you please stop making unrealistic requests?

Official Night Shift Schedule πŸ“‹

10 p.m. — Human bedtime announcement.

11 p.m. — Strategic planning.

12 a.m. — Warm-up.

1 a.m. — Advanced jumping.

2 a.m. — Security inspection.

3 a.m. — Olympic finals.

5 a.m. — Small snack.

6 a.m. — Sleep.

Just as humans wake up.

Perfect timing.

Final Message From Gryzka πŸŒ™

Dear humans,

Please understand.

When you sleep...

I work.

When you rest...

I patrol.

When you dream...

I chase invisible enemies across the hallway.

It is a difficult job.

A demanding job.

A job requiring dedication, courage, and excellent paw coordination.

Now, if you'll excuse me...

I hear something suspicious.

It might be a ghost.

It might be a dust particle.

It might be absolutely nothing.

But a professional athlete cannot ignore a challenge.

See you at 3 a.m.

I'll be the one running past your bedroom like a furry rocket.

Gryzka 🐾
